Getting a new puppy? (Page 3)
Health/ Expenses
Many breeds are known for certain health issues. For example: the English bulldog is called the “train wreck breed” because of the MULTIPLE health complications they have. This is due to poor breeding. The squished wrinkly face and the short legs were cute to people who did not know that these characteristics were actually genetic abnormalities. So they kept cross breeding over and over…this is what has caused the Bulldog to have many health issues. Same with the Great Dane or other extra large breeds: they do not have a long life expectancy because of their health issues. Most extra large breeds have bone or joint issues that you must be aware of. All that added weight bearing down on their joints. OUCH! Some dogs are also susceptible to “bloat”. It is frequently reported in deep-chested dogs, such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Dobermans are particularly at risk. This is a very serious issue which must be addressed immediately or it will result in death. Before settling on a breed, make sure you do tons of research on their possible health issues. You do not want to be surprised with large vet bill!
It’s important to think about the expenses such as food, frontline, Heart Guard, and vaccines. It’s also always a good idea to prepare for any unexpected emergencies. Late night Emergency Clinic visits are never cheap! If you are a traveler you must think about the expense of a kennel or private caretaker. And of course puppies will need to be spayed or neutered!
