Getting a new puppy? (Page 4)
Grooming
Some breeds require more grooming than others. For example a Maltese or a Poodle will need a regular grooming visit where as a Labrador may not. This is due to long hair that can become matted if not taken care of. Some breeds are also known for their shedding ability! Keep in mind that your new dog will be a part of your life for the next 10-15 years! This also sounds silly but if you do get a dog that sheds a lot, think about the color. For example if you get a black Labrador who sheds excessively…wearing white or having white furniture is not really an option. Keep in mind that the length of hair is not necessarily an indication of how much it sheds. Also, some breeds are known for their drool, such as Mastiffs or Newfoundland’s. If you are not ready to mop up drool mark these breeds off your want list! This is a given…but make sure you are not allergic to the breed before you buy one!
When you do get a dog or puppy make sure to be handling it everywhere on it’s body! Hold the paws, ears, tail…have your friends and neighbors do the same. This will help him/her get over the fear of being touched by strangers.
